Uthman leads the planning and execution of diversity and inclusion efforts, and multicultural marketing strategies, across Comcast’s Northeast Division, leading these efforts for 22,000 employees. She created the division’s Diversity and Inclusion Council in 2017 to drive a culture of inclusion for employees across the footprint and has begun rolling out chapters of the council in each of the Division’s five regions. “As the world continues to become majority multicultural, we need to ensure we have employees at all levels of our organizations who reflect the diverse communities in which we live and serve,” she says.

In what areas should the industry step up its efforts with regard to diversity and inclusion?
As the world continues to become majority multicultural, we need to ensure we have employees at all levels of our organizations who reflect the diverse communities in which we live and serve. We can no longer employ one general market campaign and expect to appeal to all consumers. A company’s approach must be authentic. For instance, at Comcast we’ve had great success reaching multicultural markets by tapping into our Employee Resource Groups to help refine our marketing strategy for a variety of consumer groups.

What’s your best advice to someone just entering the video content/distribution industry?
Look for a company that values diversity and will allow you to be your authentic self! Don’t be afraid to use your voice. You’re being hired for the unique perspective only you can bring. Your idea may help develop the next great product, create the next hit show or drive transformational change for your organization.
