“My best advice for someone entering the business is to keep abreast of innovation in the industry and stay open to the myriad of opportunities from a product and platform perspective,” says Washington, who continues to take that advice herself as she manages government affairs in the greater DC area, along with a host of community investment initiatives.“The cable industry is bursting with innovation in its use of various video distribution platforms, as well as branching into different business avenues such as mobile and home automation,” she says.

What’s a recent example of a step forward for diversity in the industry?
It has been wonderful to see the continued rise in diversity among company senior leadership teams. Our Beltway Region senior leadership team, led by regional senior vice president Mary McLaughlin, is a prime example as it is comprised of a mix of backgrounds and ethnicities, including five female leaders, with two being people of color. This type of diversity in executive leadership is exactly what Comcast strives to achieve across the company, and I feel privileged to be a part of a team that is a beacon for diversity in the industry.

What’s your best advice to someone just entering the video content/distribution industry?
My best advice for someone entering the business is to keep abreast of innovation in the industry and stay open to the myriad of opportunities from a product and platform perspective. The cable industry is bursting with innovation in its use of various video distribution platforms, as well as branching into different business avenues such as mobile and home automation.

What’s been the most dramatic change in your sector of the business today vs. three ago?
The focus on value and choice of content for our customers. At Comcast when it comes to television, we think of ourselves as the aggregator of all aggregators. We want to have the best choices available in one place, which is why we’ve added Netflix, YouTube, Pandora and iHeartRadio to our X1 platform, with plans to add Amazon Prime Video later this year.
