This wonderful show plays a grand shell game with its audience. Sometimes it subverts tropes, sometimes it embraces them. Is the protagonist Rebecca a sympathetic anti-hero, or is she is a clear danger to herself and others? Enter the show’s foundational musical numbers, which never make it clear if you are witnessing the exorcising of this poor woman’s demons, or merely their manifestation. Nevertheless they are always honest, poignant, and entertaining as hell.
