What does the metaverse mean to you? Initially it meant a place to go to experience an alternate reality. Today it has evolved into an environment where you can interact with others in a simulated world, stressing that social element. As it is evolving, it will be applied not only to entertainment but also to work and learning. Such an immersive virtual world will require high speed, low latency, highly secure and reliable network connectivity.
How many companies have you worked for? Five companies over 36 years
Band I’d go see live: Kansas (have seen them 25 times, most recently in February)
What will it take to see a seismic shift away from linear television for sports? I don’t know if I see that shift ever happening. People love to see their sports live and go on social networking to commiserate. Within linear viewing of sports, I see a major shift into immersive viewing (3D, interactive, etc.).
What childhood memento have you kept? My grandfather carved a wooden head from a tree branch and gave it to me when I was 9.
Favorite dish that I can also make myself: NY strip steak on the grill, with baked potato and green beans. I also like to grill exotic meats like bison, venison, antelope, yak and llama.
Has the telco rollout of 5G wireless in North America impacted your business? 5G is both an opportunity and a competitive threat to the cable industry. Operators are looking to emphasize the former in setting their strategic direction. Examples are deploying private 5G in enterprises and x-haul.
If I had a time machine, I would… visit with Benjamin Franklin or Abraham Lincoln, two of my heroes.
