In June, Armstrong was appointed to the newly created position of GM for BET. In this role, he drives overall strategy and operations, with direct oversight of content and multiplatform scheduling, marketing, corporate communications and operations. Armstrong also communicates with teams across Viacom Media Networks. BET chairman and CEO Debra Lee said Armstrong was selected for the job because he exemplifies the values of strong, dynamic leadership, and has vast knowledge of how audiences connect with content. Outside of the office, he works with multicultural dance institution Dance Theatre of Harlem, serving on its board. When mentoring, Armstrong offers a personalized plan, “guiding my advice from what I have previously learned about their strengths, weaknesses and previous wins and losses.” He also makes sure to check in to see what they did after the last mentor session to build on their long-term plan.
