EVP & GM, Discovery Networks Iberia, Discovery Communications

Recently promoted to her current post, Buzanello is responsible for Discovery networks in Spain and Portugal. In just four months of leadership, the Spanish team achieved full distribution of its portfolio with pay TV providers and launched a new FTA channel with a key partner in the market. She also leads the integration of Eurosport in the Iberian market and the launch of Eurosport 2 Xtra as a premium network on all affiliates across the Portuguese region. Although she’s proud to say 49 percent of women working at Discovery hold management positions, “Two aspects that society must continue working on are gender salary equalization and women’s access to management positions.”

Which sector of the cable industry best demonstrates gender equality? Which could use some enlightenment?

During the last few years, the cable industry has experienced significant changes in favor of gender equality, but there is still a long way to go. Two aspects that society must continue working on are gender salary equalization and women’s access to management positions. I am proud to be able to say that Discovery is a role model for other companies in this sense, with 49 percent of women holding management positions.

What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?

Now that I am a mother, I am easily able to identify the advice I would give my 13-year-old self – the same advice that I give my daughters. I would highlight the importance of persevering and working with passion to achieve the goals that you set in life. I would also advise myself to never forget that, in order to advance, it is necessary to work as a team and have an open mind in order to seize every opportunity life offers you. My final advice is that it’s important enjoy the work you do and to respect others in all situations.

Which current programming best reflects the kind of women’s roles you like to see and why?

In my opinion, one of the current programs that best reflects my preferred roles is “The Little Couple.” The series features Bill Klein and Jennifer Arnold, who both have skeletal dysplasia. Arnold is only 96.5 centimeters tall – but nothing stopped her from completing her Pediatric Residency Program and Masters of Science in Medical Education. Her self-confidence, drive to succeed and optimistic attitude are an inspiration to women everywhere.
