Rubén Mendiola
The New England Patriots team wasn’t the only winner on Super Bowl Sunday this year. That February 1 game also marked the day that NBC Universo launched under Mendiola’s leadership. The modern sports and entertainment cable channel for Latinos delivers some of the best sports franchises in the world including FIFA World Cup, NASCAR Mexico Series and the 2016 Rio Olympics. Mendiola continues to oversee his team’s efforts to acquire, develop and launch edgy entertainment programming that will resonate with a broad Latino audience.
What’s your biggest professional accomplishment in the past 12 months?
The development and launch of NBC UNIVERSO, and building a team who is invested in, and passionate about, growing the NBC UNIVERSO brand and delivering high-quality sports and entertainment to U.S. Latinos. This has been the most challenging and yet the most rewarding year in my professional career.
How do you define diversity?
Diversity is a reflection, and consequence, of our everyday reality. America is a true melting pot of cultures and ways of life. The embodiment of culture in this country is in its richness in diversity. Even within the Latino community there is tremendous diversity, which makes the culture so exciting, vibrant and passionate.
How can cable better support diversity?
For cable, diversity is paramount. As you embrace diversity in the workforce, as well as on and behind the screen, there’s a more perfect reflection of America and therefore more people are going to connect with you. The growth of America is coming from diverse audiences, and the growth of cable is tied to this, so we need to fully embrace diversity to continue to be relevant.
