Jennifer Mirgorod
EVP, Brand Distribution, Content Distribution, Turner Broadcasting
Not all of us can say we need to be on Facebook for work, but Mirgorod and her brand distribution team can. That’s because they are charged with setting the marketing and distribution strategy for Turner’s portfolio of domestic networks, which includes crafting deals with emerging partners such as Google and Facebook. Currently, Mirgorod advises women in the Turner Women Today “Circle Mentoring” program. To her daughter, who’s about to turn 11, Mirgorod advises, “Run for student government, sign up for a new club or volunteer experience, do your extra credit work and push yourself in subjects you are not as comfortable with.”
What advice would you give your 13-year-old self?
This question hits home with me as I have a daughter who will soon be 11 years old. I would tell her or my 13-year-old self to take risks at school. Run for student government, sign up for a new club or volunteer experience, do your extra credit work and push yourself in subjects you are not as comfortable with (like math or science) but don’t be afraid to ask for help. One can learn and grow so much by putting yourself “out there” and trying new things, and now I know that it’s a lot easier to do when you’re 13!
Which current programming best reflects the kind of women’s roles you like to see and why?
I’m a big “Homeland” fan, and am especially fond of the strong, yet tortured character Carrie Mathison played by Claire Danes. I’m looking forward to season six starting back in January. TNT’s “Animal Kingdom” features Ellen Barkin in the fascinating role of “Smurf”, a dominant character who is the clear matriarch of her family. I love seeing a veteran actress in such a juicy, critical role.
What’s been the biggest story in cable this year?
I think it continues to be consolidation within the industry – with Altice purchasing Suddenlink and Cablevision and Charter’s acquisition of Time Warner Cable.
