In a given week, 129 million Americans tune in to see one of the networks Hammer oversees, and many of those channels have seen substantial growth. At a time when the industry is in flux—emerging technologies, changing viewer habits—Hammer is at the forefront of the execs who are figuring out how the business will adapt. And she continues to succeed. E!, one of the many networks she oversees, has delivered significant ratings growth across all key demos in 2Q ’15 and is the second-fastest-growing cable network among the Top 30. How does she unwind? “It’s all about my daily workout,” Hammer says. “Problems seem to melt away the minute I meet my trainer… he’s so tough I focus simply on survival.”

What/who inspires you at work? What/who inspires you outside the office?

At work, I’m most inspired by my team, some of the best and brightest in the business. They are honest, loyal and truly collaborative…and help foster a culture of mutual respect. These are all qualities I not only admire in the workplace, but insist on. Outside the office, it’s my two kids and my adorable grandchild. I learn something new every time I sit with them… as much from the 2-year-old as the 22 and 36-year-olds!

Best trick for maintaining the personal-professional life balance?

The trick is to acknowledge that it doesn’t exist. You may be able to “have it all,” but never all at once…there will always be times when business demands take priority over family, and vice versa.  You can only hope that things even out in the long run.
