To become more agile, larger wireless operators are shifting their infrastructure planning toward software, says a Maravedis-Rethink report. "Carriers need to invest in intelligence, from core to backhaul to the network edge — not just in hardware capacity — in order to deliver quality services," explains Caroline Gabriel, research director. Right now, SK Telecom is the global leader in agile networks, and it will evolve toward a full software defined network in the future. It also is pioneering content delivery at the cellsite, the report notes. And wireless carriers are trying to make a dent in OTT, with five of them setting up completely separate digital brands and business units, with at least 20 more following later this year. Telefonica Digital emerges as the best-positioned to succeed.
