Belgian cable operator Telenet and Alcatel-Lucent today announced a major step in the operator’s mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) project. Telenet has selected Alcatel-Lucent as overall network integrator and entered a seven-year agreement with Alcatel-Lucent. The vendor will be the overall integrator of the full mobile core and of the value added service network components. As part of the agreement, Alcatel-Lucent will be responsible for the supply, installation, integration, operation and maintenance of Telenet’s next generation mobile core network and service creation infrastructure.

“We notice a trend of fixed network operators evolving towards offering mobile services, but Telenet is aggressively implementing this strategy, making Telenet the first European cable operator to become a full MVNO,” said Paul Depuydt, head of Alcatel-Lucent’s business in the Benelux region.
