David Howe
Title: President, SyFy and Chiller
Years in Cable: 15
Education: Reading University, U.K.
Best Advice in 7 Words or Less: Keep calm and carry on.
Why Him? In case you missed him at Comic-Con, Howe oversees program development, marketing and global brand strategy for the sister networks across all media. He also tends to Syfy and Chiller’s public affairs initiatives. In short, he’s the one who’s shaped Chiller into a 24/7 scare-fest, including the introduction of feature-length premieres every Friday night and a broadening of international content and reality shows. After a successful rebranding, SyFy is steaming ahead with an aggressive programming slate including all 31 episodes of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” which it began airing this spring, original series, and proven reality shows like “Ghost Hunters.”
New CFO: NBCU brass this summer promoted Rob Spodek to take on SVP/CFO duties at SyFy and Chiller.
Year Ahead: We like Howe’s plan for more originals, but “Caprica” proved there’s no such thing as a sure thing in original programming—a lesson he won’t soon forget.
The one burning question I have for Siri on my iPhone 4S: Do you come here often?
The one thing I tell my kids about success in life: I don’t have kids. So instead, I once tried to teach my dog how to play dead. Then he got back up. That’s success!
Worst thing I’ve ever heard someone say in a meeting: “Why are we having a meeting?”
My best technique for deterring time-wasting office visits from co-workers: My assistant scares them off with a Harry Potter wand.
My favorite business and/or motivational book: “Orbiting The Giant Hairball.” I just like the title.
If I invented my own app it would: Read minds. ?
