Base-Station Capex Down, But LTE Could Help
Base-station spending during 3Q12 in the Asia-Pacific region reached $7.6 billion — more than half of the total market and more than four times the spending in Western Europe or North America. Meanwhile, adds ABI Research, the total wireless-infrastructure-equipment market continued its downward trend during that quarter, reaching only $15.4 billion – a 3.1-percent decrease from 2Q12 but up nearly 19 percent from the same quarter in 2011. LTE technology continues to push base-station sales, with 3Q12 orders of LTE gear at the same level as 2Q12 and almost three times higher than in 3Q11; WCDMA technologies also grew by 21 percent compared with 3Q11.
