Mark of Z: Comcast Contemplating Video Over 'Net Website
What’s a Ziddeo? Or a Ziddio? We’re not quite sure, but Comcast has trademarked the names to provide "video broadcasting services over the Internet or other communications networks." The trademark, filed on Aug 18, goes on to say Ziddeo would provide a Website featuring video clips, musical performances, music videos, related film clips, photographs and other video and multimedia materials. The trademark filings are likely an exploration of potential services by Comcast Interactive Media, a unit created late last year to grow the company’s Internet business. Of course, companies file trademarks all the time and don’t necessarily act on all of them, so only time will tell if Ziddeo zooms forward or is zapped before takeoff. On Aug 10, shortly before the trademark filing, someone anonymously registered the domains Ziddeo.com and Ziddio.com through Internet domain registrar GoDaddy.com. Comcast HSD subs can already access many video clips and music videos through the MSO’s homegrown media player "The Fan." But the Ziddeo/Ziddio trademark specifies it would be a Website as opposed to an online multimedia player.
