Macrovision agreed to buy Gemstar-TV Guide in a deal valued at $2.8 billion. According to CableFAX Daily, the two companies said that the combination would multiple enable devices to access commercial and personal protected content via intuitive guides. Macrovision holds hundreds of software licensing, digital rights management (DRM) and content protection patents worldwide. Gemstar’s interactive program guide is used by the cable and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) industries.
