Enterprises need to take a disciplined approach when it comes to migrating their businesses to the cloud. A new white paper from Overland Park, Kan.-based TMNG Global offers an operational roadmap, a framework of requirements and best practices, and a solid financial model.??

In part, The Challenges of Enterprise Cloud Migration: Successfully Navigating a Bewildering Landscape says many IT projects fail because of poorly?understood requirements, lack of systematic planning and inadequate?business cases. In reality, TMNG Global says, these factors are symptoms of a more fundamental core issue, namely that migrating an existing enterprise IT?application to a new environment ( e.g., the cloud) is a specialized?business activity that is difficult to execute unless one has significant experience and use a disciplined approach.??

"The sheer complexity of the decision to move to the cloud, and of the migration itself, amplifies the critical imperative to get the requirements right up front," said Rich Nespola, chairman and CEO. "Executives in charge of designing their company’s cloud strategy need to clearly define the applications that should move to the cloud based upon their business goals and potential opportunities,?identify the best practices that should guide their migration process, and evaluate the wide array of cloud service providers to find the most appropriate partner."??

The roadmap should be constructed by experts with in-depth operational experience with IT migrations and should include three things:

>>A holistic set of predefined requirements for the business, technical and operational areas that will be impacted by the migration.
>> An automated tool that substantially eases the process of constructing RFIs/RFPs and permits unbiased scoring of vendor responses.
>> Expert guidance to motivate involvement across all impacted business units.?

"A necessary companion to the operational roadmap is a comprehensive financial model that identifies the costs and benefits of a move to the?cloud," adds Bill Opet, senior vice president/Cable, Broadband and Cloud Business Unit at TMNG Global. "Enterprises need to thoroughly quantify all elements relating to the planning, migration and ongoing support for the applications they are moving to the cloud."?
