Harmonic Inc.’s next generation of its Agile Compression Engine (ACE) now is on display at the NAB Show. The device incorporates the company’s H.264 video-compression technology “to deliver a new level of transcoding density with exceptional video quality for multiscreen applications,” Harmonic says.

The ProStream 1000 with ACE reportedly is capable of transcoding as many as 20 HD streams and 80 adaptive streaming profiles in a single, dense, power-efficient 1RU appliance. It has been integrated with Harmonic’s ProMedia file transcoders, its adaptive bit rate packager and origin server, and the MediaGrid active storage system.

The format combo, which includes Apple HTTP Live Streaming, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, MPEG-DASH and Adobe HTTP Dynamic Streaming, “allows programmers, pay-TV operators, and terrestrial broadcasters to deliver high-quality video to traditional set-top boxes and devices like tablets, smartphones, connected TVs or PCs simultaneously, without compromising on functionality or density,” Harmonic adds.

ProStream 1000 with ACE also includes multiplexing and encryption as well as audio transcoding and CALM Act-compliant audio level controls.

The multiscreen capabilities for ProStream 1000 with ACE are scheduled to ship in the second quarter. The NAB Show in Las Vegas ends today.
