ARRIS Acquires C-COR ARRIS Group Inc. and C-COR Incorporated have entered into a definitive agreement whereby ARRIS will acquire C-COR for $730 million. The purchase price is to be paid in a mix of cash and ARRIS stock. With 250 customers around the world and combined collected revenues of more than $1.2 billion in the last year, the merged companies will become the largest pure-play provider of equipment and technical solutions in the cable industry, according to a statement released by ARRIS. BigBand Unveils Broadband Edge QAM 6000 BigBand Networks, Inc. has unveiled its “universal” edge quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) platform—the Broadband Edge QAM 6000—designed to deliver a wide range services, including video-on-demand, switched digital video, network PVR, video-over-DOCSIS, high-speed data and voice-over-IP. Cox Communications is deploying the BigBand BEQ6000 to power its SDV deployment in Northern Virginia. Dutch operator Multikabel has deployed the BEQ6000 platform for M-CMTS to provide high-speed data and voice-over-IP services, and Japanese operators Cable Networks Akita, Hino Cable Television and Bay Communications are using the BEQ6000 to deliver high-speed data services as well. Motorola Bridges MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 Motorola has introduced its DSR-6000 receivers, touted as the first of a new generation of receiver-transcoders designed to allow networks to use both MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-4 content. According to Motorola, programmers using the DSR-6000 series can distribute content solely in the MPEG-4 HD format, while enabling service providers to deliver in either MPEG-4 or MPEG-2, and either standard definition or high definition formats. VCAS Deployed in Qatar Verimatrix has announced that its Video Content Authority System (VCAS) has been selected by Qtel for use in the first integrated IPTV triple-play deployment in the State of Qatar. Verimatrix asserts that VCAS will offer higher levels of security than traditional smartcard systems, protecting MPEG4-AVC data streams on an upgraded infrastructure.
