Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather told CTAM attendees that the biggest challenge of his HDNet gig is "to make the journalism as good as the picture is… We’re not where we want to be. And we’re not where we will be." He said declining ratings among evening newscasts on broadcast nets, meanwhile, present "a real and present danger" that network brass could cancel at least one of them and give the time back to local affiliates. But he urged broadcast news divisions to avoid softening their tone in pursuit of ratings and entertainment value, taking a quick swipe at CBS pres Les Moonves: "He knows entertainment very well, and I have a lot of respect for him—but he doesn’t know news."
