Charter Communications and the Mobile Devices and Home business of Motorola have announced that Charter will expand high-definition (HD) services for its customers utilizing switched digital video (SDV) equipment and services supplied by Motorola, allowing for more content to be delivered to customers without increasing network bandwidth.

"Charter plans to have launched SDV in more than 60 percent of our footprint by the end of 2010," said Marwan Fawaz, Charter’s EVP of operations and CTO. "Motorola’s proven switched digital video solution allows us to meet the growing demand for HD and speed."

Motorola’s SDV architecture dynamically transmits only those channels that are being watched in specific neighborhoods at any given time, maximizing the bandwidth efficiency. This process occurs as quickly as a customer can change channels, so it is seamless to the customer. The SDV launch will allow Charter to deploy more HD service and continue to enhance its Internet service. Charter has already deployed Motorola’s SDV services in North Carolina, Missouri and Nevada, with more launches planned this year.

"As more of our digital customers upgrade to HD televisions and equipment, Charter is delivering more HD content – from movies to series and educational shows – to bring customers an expanded, enhanced viewing experience," said Doug Ike, VP of advanced video engineering for Charter.
