Why Him? Granted, he wasn’t in charge when Mad Men first came to AMC, but he was there to greenlight it and Breaking Bad, which grabbed two Emmys. Moreover, the creator-friendly environment he’s instilled at AMC is bringing blockbuster ratings and unprecedented Emmy nominations and 8 wins, including basic cable’s first Emmy for Best Drama ( Mad Men). Collier’s push to integrate "cinematic television" with AMC’s film vault proves not only the difference quality can make but the enduring power of the scripted series. Season two of Mad Men averaged 1.5mln viewers, up 63% vs season one.
Really Mad: As of this writing Mad Men’s cast and creator lacked contracts for season 3. Rumors held that the series might move to HBO or Showtime. [Ed Note: AMC has since said the series will return to the network.]
Year Ahead:
It’ll be hard to top ’07-’08, but it’ll be a crime if Mad Men season 2 doesn’t get plenty of Emmy love. It’ll be a bigger crime for AMC if Mad Men departs. [Ed Note: See note above.]
Unnecessary Luxury I Like Most: My time machine
Least Favorite Word: Whatever (particularly when used in place of my least favorite saying "it is what it is"…)
Trait I Most Admire in People: Opposable thumbs — it’s why humans rule…
Favorite Sports Teams: Mets (particularly pre-Sept), Jets…I seem drawn to metro-area teams that can’t close.
