WINNER: LIVE FROM ABBEY ROAD, SUNDANCE CHANNEL

This fascinating 12-part series drops modern-day music acts into the legendary London recording studio where the Beatles once roamed — just to see what happens. The results often are magical. Almost as compelling as the performances themselves is watching otherwise successful music megastars in self-reflection mode as they take in the surroundings and recount how music changed their lives. The smart editing and directing of this series gives it the power to transport viewers to another dimension; one in which modern-day artists perform in the shadow of their idols. It’s especially interesting how well this show fits Sundance Channel, which continues to transition from its original roots in indie film to a broader mission that celebrates the global community around artistry, invention and creative innovation.

Honorable Mentions:

Fall Out Boy: Live from the Chicago Theatre, fuse: Not only did the band give a top-notch performance, but fuse pulled out every stop to bring the raw energy of the show home for its viewers. Rock on!

Concert Series, HDNet: Covering everything from opera to rock to, uh… Blue Man Group? Oh, yeah. That’s the HDNet Concert Series, which offers something for everyone and always makes sure to deliver it in the crispest audio and video available. It’s like being there. Really.

Revealed: Third Day, Gospel Music Channel: Gospel’s look at Third Day peeled back the onion and dug deep into the origins of its album and musical aspirations.

Spectacle: Elvis Costello with…: This show just never gets old because understated host Costello has a way of listening, learning and gently prodding stories out of his often incredible guests. That Costello is a legend seems to fade into the background as he shines the spotlight elsewhere.

Fast Fact

  • Abbey Road Studio houses the world’s largest purpose-built recording space; it can accommodate a 110-piece orchestra and 100-person choir simultaneously.
