BigBand Networks says it will demonstrate advances in switched digital video and the personalization of programming at next week’s CableLabs Winter Conference. BigBand has also been selected by the conference organizers to participate in its Innovation Showcase, outlining how cable operators can enhance picture quality and increase spectrum density by delivering switched digital video and on-demand streams in variable-bit-rate (VBR) formats. According to BigBand, the company’s approach is designed to reduce the cost of implementing VBR by removing the need for a video reduction engine in the hub, instead pre-processing streams in the headend and dynamically alternating among bit rates at the edge of the cable network.
