Letters Fiber for Everyone CT’s Pipeline asked readers how deep fiber needs to go. Here’s one response (we’ll forward to Santa Claus, or Jim Farmer): I’d like fiber to my house. I’d like a switched optical Ethernet at 1 Gbps. I’d take the handoff at the fiber and get my own Ethernet switch with a fiber input. I’d use it to run SCTE-List, to send and receive email, surf the Web, chat over instant messenger, and receive voice and video over IP. I’d like several static IP addresses. I’d like to have the provider host my DNS names (like scte-list.org). I’d like transit to the Internet. And I’d like support for IP multicast. David Devereaux-Weber, P.E.
