Avail-TVN has made available its 3D Video On Demand (VOD) movie offering. The new service launches today with Verizon FiOS and will offer feature films from most of the major studios. Avail-TVN’s 3D VOD service does not require any additional equipment or upgrades to service providers’ existing equipment.

Avail-TVN is developing its 3D services to work with its service provider customers’ existing infrastructure, including encoders and set-top boxes. Only minor over the air (OTA) software updates are required for set-top boxes. The company is using frame-compatible stereoscopic compression to transmit 3D files at the same rate and with the same bandwidth requirements as 2D HD. Titles are available in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
