ADVA Optical Networking has developed a DPSK-3ASK (Differential Phase-Shift Keying, 3-level Amplitude-Shift Keying) modulation format for serial 100 Gbps transmission over a single wavelength channel.

In labs in Meiningen, Germany, ADVA engineers successfully demonstrated the new modulation scheme, which utilizes available 40G components and is designed to facilitate operation on a standard ITU channel grid. DPSK-3ASK is designed to be complementary to existing 10G and 40G designs and to fit in existing installed network architectures. It is designed to be compatible with DWDM systems, and when coupled with optical amplification, to facilitate metro/regional transmission distances up to 600 km.
