As we draw closer to SCTE-ISBE's Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans, Cablefax will highlight important tech stories in this eletter, making sure you're in the know when you hit the exhibit floor.

When your phone rings, who do you assume it is: a family member, a friend, or a scammer? It's becoming more common for folks to fear that third choice so much that they stop answering their phones or disconnect their landlines, if they haven't already. The conversation around robocalls has dominated 2019 with regulators and voice providers alike weighing in on the best way to combat the spoofed calls. The next step in the fight is the implementation of the SHAKEN/STIR framework, which allows each call to be "signed" as authentic before your phone even begins to buzz.  The FCC approved an NPRM at its June meeting that would require voice providers to implement the framework by the end of 2019 and the 51 state Attorneys General recently announced a partnership with 12 voice carriers that would ensure customers aren't left to foot the bill for call-blocking initiatives. But SHAKEN/STIR won't be enough to stop all robocalls from getting through, and thus the discussion around the best way to protect consumers continues.

Expo attendees will receive an update on the progress of SHAKEN/STIR at the ACA Connects Breakfast on Oct 2. Kicking off bright and early at 8am, the breakfast will also see ACA Connects pres/CEO Matt Polka and svp, government affairs Ross Lieberman tackle the association's C-band proposal for 5G and rural broadband. SCTE-ISBE pres/CEO Mark Dzuban will also make an appearance to touch on any SCTE-ISBE initiatives with the association.
