As we draw closer to SCTE-ISBE's Cable-Tec Expo in New Orleans, Cablefax will highlight important tech stories in this eletter, making sure you're in the know when you hit the exhibit floor.

With operational costs rising, distributors and telecom players are always looking for opportunities to lessen the stress on their bottom line. Plenty have already turned to third parties for their business support services, trusting them with the handling of customer billing, for example. But now, they're turning to some of those same folks to assist in another cost-cutting measure: migrating to the cloud. It may be all the rage now, but that doesn't mean we have all the answers on how to protect data placed on the cloud from hackers and the like. Those questions become even more important as we look at the transition to 5G, the management of those networks and up-and-coming technologies like blockchain that could change how we think of network security.

One of the use cases for 5G is wireless and wireline convergence, which would see a 5G core mange both access networks. Expo attendees will be able to get the peek into the framework and the potential threats mobile subscribers will face at the "5G Security" session on Oct 1. Kicking off at 1pm, the panel will cover security threats in each of three stages: pre-authentication, authentication and post-authentication.
