As the first Black woman to serve as a network news president, Godwin presides over America’s No. 1 news network—broadcast, digital, streaming and audio—which last year won nine Edward R. Murrow Awards. Since 2023, ABC News Studios has produced over 120 hours, including “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” which premiered at Sundance and earned ABC News’ first primetime Emmy nomination. From “Good Morning America” to “World News Tonight,” Godwin supports journalists. For a year, “Uvalde: 365” followed events surrounding the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.
What emerging industry trend are you most excited by? Streaming is the future, and we know that opportunities abound for streaming content on mobile devices. Most Americans are connected to their phones or another device, so it’s the fastest way to communicate with them, inform and entertain them. That is a great opportunity when you’re in the news business. The challenge to get audiences to choose your network first—news and entertainment drives us to constantly find new ways to connect with our audience wherever they are, whenever they watch or listen and on whatever device they choose.
What TV series should everyone binge? “This Is Us.” I see so much of my life and my family in that show.
What book, movie or TV series has greatly influenced your leadership style? I have so many great leadership books but my favorite is a book of quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. I find it applicable to many of the situations that with servant leadership.
What’s your favorite way to de-stress? I’m an avid runner. I like to say I run far and frequently. Being in nature is very therapeutic.
