Eight projects representing “significant innovation” in communications technology that benefit people with disabilities will receive Awards for Advancement in Accessibility, presented by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski during a ceremony set for Dec. 19 at commission headquarters. This year’s winners are Project StAR for Accessible Radio 2012/The Narrator (Consumer Empowerment Information); WGBH National Center for Accessible Media: “Media Access Mobile” (Mobile Applications); Prime III for a universally designed voting machine (Civic Participation Solutions); Project: Possibilities SS12 for Code for a Cause (Education: College or University); Accessible Media Inc. (Video Programming); and Tiramisu Transit (Geo-Location Services). The chairman’s honorable mentions include Google+ Hangouts (Civic Participation) and Virtual Braille Keyboard (Mobile Applications). The winning projects will be displayed Dec. 19-31 in the FCC’s Technology Experience Center.
