New Stuff 11/12/12

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) is celebrating Veteran’s Day by unveiling the SCTE Veterans Network (Vet-Net), a program designed to assist U.S. vets to make the transition to careers in the cable industry. Here’s how it works: SCTE Vet-Net will leverage the collective resources of the cable technology community and other organizations to identify discharged members of the military with an interest in becoming part of cable’s next-generation workforce. The program will provide industry-specific tools, training and certifications as well as support infrastructures that can link military veterans directly with job providers. “Matching qualified veterans with jobs in the private sector is an implied but critical part of the country’s military commitment. As part of that commitment, Comcast has pledged to hire 1,000 veterans in the next three years,” notes Marcia Shippey, Comcast Vet-Net leader.  “Vet-Net is the latest in a series of programs that have been implemented by the cable industry to help our servicemen and women, and we’re proud to support this important SCTE initiative.” In addition, SCTE members or military veterans currently employed in cable can participate in networking groups that provide insight and advice to candidates for engineering positions. Also, a “Sponsor-a-Vet” element will allow SCTE members and other individuals to sponsor SCTE memberships for veterans, thus enabling them to take advantage of theVet-Net program. Its hardware includes new line cards supporting 500G long-haul super-channels with 100G activated initially along with Infinera’s 500G Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and FlexCoherent processor that delivers Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD)…Touting it as the industry’s first low-power dual 16-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) with JESD204B for multi-carrier broadband wireless applications,  IDT’s high-speed DAC “delivers best-in-class dynamic performance, eases system-level cooling requirements, and simplifies board routing with the JESD204B digital serial interface.” The DAC165xD1G5HN is a 16-bit 1.5 Gsps dual DAC with 10 Gbps JESD204B serial interface and x2, x4, and x8 interpolation filters. A second product, the DAC165xD1G5HN, can be used in wireless infrastructure radio base station transceiver that use long-term evolution (LTE), long-term evolution advanced (LTE-A), long-term evolution time-division duplex (LTE-TDD), multicarrier global system for mobile communications (MC-GSM) and wideband code division multiple access (W-CDMA)…Alaska Communications has rolled out 4G LTE wireless service to many state venues, including Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Homer, Kenai, Palmer, Seward, Soldotna, Wasilla and Whittier.
