U.K.-based mobile service providers were among the earliest in the world to embrace outsourced network operations, and that market remains one of the biggest and most advanced for managed-service opportunities. Notes ABI Research’s Jim Eller, “Some of the biggest multi-year managed services contracts in the U.K. are expiring this year, and the fight is on to see who will win these billion-pound opportunities.” Ericsson reportedly has dominated the U.K. managed-services market since 2005, but its client 3 has sent RFPs to several invited vendors. Another Ericsson customer, Mobile Broadband Network Limited, has done the same thing. Nokia Siemens Networks and Huawei could benefit in this new round of contract negotiations…After a spate of contract wins, IC solutions maker Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation now claims to own a nearly 60-percent marketshare in the microwave backhaul and 75-percent marketshare in the millimeter-wave backhaul segments…Full-Spectrum Capture (FSC) digital cable front-end receivers have been adopted into more than 12 video gateway and set-top-box designs at major manufacturers in the United States, Europe and Asia, says MaxLinear Inc. the FSC family delivers as much as 1 Gbps of data reception capability, “enabling cable operators to compete against telecom carriers that have recently announced 300 Mbps of Internet service offerings. Each FSC device replaces several discrete single-channel cable tuners in a gateway or a set-top box with just one broadband multi-channel receiver,” the company adds.
