What You Need To Know Now...
Comcast’s Network Bandwidth Changer…And A Streamlined Remote
Comcast Cable is supercharging its core network with longtime supplier Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform that comes with third-generation WaveLogic coherent optical line interfaces. Ciena calls this platform an industry first, offering software-programmable coherent technology that scales to 400G, and that supports cloud-based services and spiraling broadband growth attributable to HD video, mobile data and cloud computing. The platform also cuts the number of network components, including optical regenerators required in Comcast’s network. In addition, Comcast is offering a redesigned and simpler X1 remote in certain markets with 29 buttons instead of 53 (24 little-used buttons merge into a single Xfinity button). Note that the FiOS remote has 47 buttons and the Cox Universal Remote from Universal Electronics has 48.
IP Will Come Whether You Want It Or Not
The transition to all-IP networks is coming, three former FCC officials told an industry audience yesterday in Washington, D.C. Famed communications attorney Richard Wiley (FCC chair 1970-77 under Nixon and Ford) said the changeover will happen sometime this year “though it’s uncertain whether providers would be required to keep two networks." NCTA CEO Michael Powell (FCC chair 2001-05 under George W. Bush), meanwhile, said the industry “goes where consumers want to go, and they are going IP.” However, former Commissioner Michael Copps, who was acting chairman for a time in 2009, urged consumer protections be put in place first. The FCC’s Technology Transitions Policy Task Force announced last month continues to collect data ahead of any upcoming policy decisions.
