Privacy Patrol—Groups File Complaints Against Viacom, Turner and 3 others
17 privacy and children’s advocacy groups want the FTC to investigate Turner, Viacom, McDonald’s, General Mills and Subway owner Doctor’s Associates for using marketing techniques that they say violate the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act. At issue are “refer-a-friend” campaigns that the groups complain induce children to submit both their personal info as well as friends’, without obtaining the verifiable consent of either sets of parents.
