What You Need To Know Now…
It’s A Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi World
We’ve been saying all along that Wi-Fi is the next big thing when it comes to cableco network deployment, usage and revenue enhancement, and CableLabs just announced its Wi-Fi app software — co-developed with Cablevision and other member companies — has been licensed to mPortal for further distribution to the industry. mPortal now will package the app technology in conjunction with its Wi-Fi product suite, allowing MSOs to direct their customers to the best and nearest Wi-Fi access points. Sales of Wi-Fi gear to operators are spiking, with Cisco reporting during a recent earnings call that it more than doubled its Wi-Fi revenue during the quarter ending Jan. 26, 2013. In addition, with wireless subs expecting connectivity anytime, anywhere, travelers are buying more Wi-Fi on airplanes when offered (sometimes at a hefty $22 per flight), with In-Stat projecting in-flight Wi-Fi revenue to top $1.5 billion in 2015.
