Ciena Powers Caribbean Undersea Network Upgrade
Global Caribbean Fiber (GCF), a provider of network services across the Eastern Caribbean, tapped Ciena to upgrade its Antilles Crossing submarine network that connects St. Croix, St. Lucia and Barbados. With Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical Platform powered by WaveLogic coherent optical processors and GeoMesh optical bypass, GCF is upgrading its submarine network to 40G coherent technology to meet the demand for high-bandwidth services from growing Internet traffic and applications like video, cloud computing and business continuity/disaster recovery. The newly upgraded network will cut over in May, managed by Ciena’s OneControl Unified Management System.
NewWave Communications Under New Ownership
In the first of what it says will be a string of purchases, Chicago-based private-equity firm GTCR plans to acquire NewWave Communications (the 22nd largest MSO passing approximately 250,000 homes and serving more than 90,000 customers in rural Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas) from Pamlico Capital. This purchase will be completed through GTCR’s previously established partnership with Rural Broadband Investments that was formed last year to acquire broadband infrastructure assets in small and mid-sized communities.
